048  Why is a translator asked to quote a rate per 1,000 words?

  • top  044   What is a rate?

  • A rate is what the translator charges by word, by line, by page of work translated, or by time, such as per hour or per day.

  • In some countries, a rate is calculated by word, by a line of so many characters, by the page, etc.

  • At InfoMarex, we will always ask a translator to quote a rate for 1,000 words of target (mother tongue) of ordinary business or commercial text.

  • Unless a translator is only engaged in specific specialised work, the rate quoted by the translator in his /her database estry is for ordinary business or commercial text.

  • For technical or specialised work, we will always, as a matter of policy, ask a translator to quote separately on a project by project basis.

  • A rate in some countries is charged on source text. At InfoMarex, we always charge /quote on target text, unless the target language is one where the word count is not easily calculated.

  • top  045   Does InfoMarex set or recommend a rate for translators?

  • Never. We do not do it as a commercial practice. In fact, in some jurisdictions, it is illegal to do so.

  • A translator quotes his/her own rate to us and enters this in their database entry as what he/she wishes to get for work done. We always accept that rate.

  • We will never offer a job to a translator at a lesser rate than that which the translator has quoted to us.

  • At times, we will, however, notify all translators on the Panel of Translators on the list in a specific language pair that a particular project of xxx words has such and such a budget of euro/US$.

  • In such a case, it does not mean that InfoMarex is suggesting that this is the best or worst rate for a particular project. A good rate attracts a translator. A poor rate attracts no interest.

  • It is up to the individual translator to state his/her availability and/or interest in the project.

  • top  046  Why should the translator quote a rate?

  • InfoMarex, when bidding for international projects or translation jobs, takes the most competitive rates from among its translators whose skills match the job and adds 25% to the rate. That is our percentage.

  • If we don't get the job, the translator loses nothing.

  • top  047   Does InfoMarex reveal any translator's rates?

  • Never! The rate(s)quoted by a translator on our internal InfoMarex database are for our use alone. We need to know that the translator wishes to be paid and we ask for a base rate in € for 1,000 commercial words.

  • Neither a client nor a competitor nor another translator is ever given access or knowledge of your CV or rates.

  • As a matter of statistical record, InfoMarex's clients rarely ask for the a translator's CV, but rely on our professional judgment that the translator, to whom we have assigned the job, is the best one available at the best price available.

  • top  048  Why is a translator asked to quote a rate per 1,000 words?

  • So that InfoMarex will know what you expect for the translation of 1,000 ordinary business words of standard commercial text in the target language.

  • InfoMarex will not offer you a LESSER rate than what you request for a translation.

  • So as to compare like with like, InfoMarex has created an international standard concept of a target rate of 1,000 words of commercial text.

  • In some countries a quoted rate may be for 55 character or 60 characters per line, in some of 25 lines per page, in other of 30 lines per page.

  • In some others, the rate is per cartella of indeterminate lines, in others per source text, target text, etc.

  • InfoMarex therefore requests an internationally standardised rate for a total 4 (four) pages / 1,000 words of target text.
